Significant Milestones in Oil Production Technology
There have been significant changes in technology in the production of oil since its first production as you will read more here. Because of its importance in our lives, it is best if we take a look at the changes that have taken place since it was discovered. Traditionally, people in Mesopotamia used bitumen to make boats and hold earrings, necklaces, and bangles together. In Egypt, it was used to solidify the famous pyramids. Bitumen, asphalt and mortar although did not require drilling, were the substances that led to the discovery of oil.
The first method used to extract oil was by digging up the soil to reach the oil. In this site you learn more about how the traditional people used oil to treat diseases, light lamps to increase visibility and keep warm. There was not much knowledge of oil and the people came up with myths about the earth releasing gases and liquids.
The next advancement in technology came in form of spring poles. The device as you discover more here, was attached to a tree which provided the required resistance to reach greater depth, was used by the Ruffner brothers to enhance salt extraction. Despite a hint of the possible things oil could be used for at this time, oil was still not a necessity. When steam was introduced to provide energy for the spring pole for the extraction of salt the process became enhanced. A Yale chemist Benjamin Silliman discovered more about how oil could be converted into kerosene that is used for lighting lamps. After the discovery by Benjamin, there was more interest in this product and commercial extraction could be seen as you’ll see here.
